1953, apartheid South Africa spent approximately R128 a year educating each white child and R17 on each Black child. By 1975, it spent approximately R605 on each white child and just R24 on each Black child.


White schools averaged just 19 pupils per teacher, compared with 56 in Black schools — nearly three times more.


White supremacy deliberately gave white children vastly greater educational resources and opportunities while denying them to Black children.


Then it used the resulting differences in educational outcomes to portray white people as hardworking and intellectually superior and Black people as lazy, uninterested in education and inferior.
