  • 1953, apartheid South Africa spent approximately R128 a year educating each white child and R17 on each Black child. By 1975, it spent approximately R605 on each white child and just R24 on each Black child.

White schools averaged just 19 pupils per teacher, compared with 56 in Black schools — nearly three times more.

White supremacy deliberately gave white children vastly greater educational resources and opportunities while denying them to Black children.

Then it used the resulting differences in educational outcomes to portray white people as hardworking and intellectually superior and Black people as lazy, uninterested in education and inferior.

Apartheid manufactured Black undereducation, poverty and inequality #mzasihistory #Netchain #Apartheid #SouthAfrica

  • On 23 December 1985, apartheid security police surrounded Dr Vejay Ramlakan’s home in Merewent, Durban, after weeks of tapping his telephone and penetrating the Umkhonto we Sizwe network around him.
Police forced their way inside and arrested Ramlakan, his wife Sandy Afrika, and MK operatives Sihle Mbongwa, Phila Ndwandwe, Richard Naidoo and “Kwazi Sithole.”
Ramlakan had joined MK in 1977 while studying medicine at the University of Natal, trained militarily in South Africa and Swaziland, and qualified as a doctor in 1980.
While working in casualty at King Edward Hospital, he joined MK’s command structures in Natal and helped build Operation Butterfly, an underground network spanning Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Port Shepstone and Newcastle.
Ramlakan commanded underground units and was later convicted of ordering the bombing of Amichand Rajbansi’s Chatsworth home, targeting the leader of apartheid’s tricameral House of Delegates.
When MK operative Sbu Mazibuko survived an explosion that killed Zinto Cele in the Bluff, Ramlakan treated his wounds and helped hide him and his family while police helicopters searched for him.
On trial for treason, Ramlakan refused to yield, declaring that apartheid could keep sentencing fighters, but more would follow “until the people do govern.”
Apartheid sent him to Robben Island, before he walked free on 16 April 1991.
White supremacy imprisoned the doctor, activist and MK commander.
Vejay Ramlakan took the war to apartheid.
